Thailand Trip- Day 5- Wat Rhong Khun and Karen Village

On our fifth day, we had kind of given up on the idea of going up to Chiang Rai.  All of the drivers we had heard of were booked for this day.  We decided to give the Old City a try again.  We stopped in a tour guide company and she was able to get us a driver who would take us to Chiang Rai.  This is something Sean really wanted to do so I felt like it was important to try and make happen.  That being said, it was a 3 hour drive. I'm glad we didn't leave when the tours usually do which is at 7 am. We left around 10 which was Koa's nap time, and he slept almost the whole way up.  It was a tender mercy because that would have been a rough ride had he been awake.

Sean's main reason for wanting to come to Chiang Rai was to see Wat Rhong Khun (white temple). It is a newer temple in comparison to the others that are hundreds and even thousands of years old.  It was built in the 90's and designed by a very talented artist.  The outside is supposed to show what you are leaving behind when you enter, which is why it looks hellish.  It is quite a spectacular piece of architecture.

I love my husband's smile in this picture

Random and awesome.

I heard it was impolite to directly photograph monks, I particularly like this picture because I was photographing the family when they rounded the corner.

Back to the outside of the temple

Karen Tribe Village.  From what I understand these are refugees, not native to Thailand.  Koa loved playing with the other children here.
